Pictorial Guide to Unzipping a ZIP File

This is a step-by-step pictorial guide to the ZIP file that contains downloadable orders placed on and downloaded from www.embroideryonline.com.  A ZIP file or compression file is used to send a number of files over the internet at once, and at a smaller size than the sum of all the individual files. Think of it as a suitcase and you’re packing your clothes (files) for a trip from one place to another.  Sending zipped orders allows all the files to be sent at once, and with a smaller attachment size, meaning a shorter download time on the receiving end.

The following instructions are for Windows XP and its unzipping utility built inside the OS.  (Click the following link to refer to Microsoft’s website for this specific URL http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306531&Product=winxp)

If you have Windows 95, 98 or 98SE, you will need a 3rd party program such as the WinZip® program to unzip these files. WinZip® is a shareware program that can be downloaded in an evaluation version from www.winzip.com.  Please, move on to PART 2 for instructions on how to download, install and use WinZip®.  Note that this program is supported by WinZip tech support and is not supported by OESD.

How to use the Unzipping Utility from Windows XP:

How to Create a Compressed Folder

To create a compressed folder, use either of the following methods.

·   METHOD 1: Open My Computer:

1. Double-click My Computer, and then open the folder where you want to make the compressed folder. For example, if you want to make a compressed folder in the root folder of drive C, double-click My Computer, and then double-click drive C to open the root folder.

2.  On the File menu, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

3.  Type a name for the new compressed folder, and then press ENTER. Your new compressed folder appears as a folder icon with a zipper.

·

·    METHOD 2: Right-click a blank area on the desktop or in a folder:

1.   Right-click a blank area in an open folder or on the desktop, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

2.  Type a name for the new compressed folder, and then press ENTER. Your new compressed folder appears as a folder icon with a zipper.

How to Add Items to or Remove Items from a Compressed Folder

·   Moving files and folders: Moving files and folders to or from compressed folders works the same as with normal uncompressed folders. For example, you can drag files or folders to the compressed folder.

When you place a file in a compressed folder, that item is automatically compressed. A file that is moved from a compressed folder is automatically uncompressed.

·   Extract all files: When you open a compressed folder, the Extract all files command appears in the Folder Tasks list.

When you click Extract all files, the Extraction Wizard starts.

You are prompted to choose a location to place the extracted files, and then the files are extracted.

NOTE: The original compressed files remain in the compressed folder.

PART 2: WinZip Instructions

When you click on the download link, a box will open up, asking whether you want to Run This Program or Save It To Disk:

Select SAVE or SAVE TO DISK, and then click OK. A new box will come up asking where you want to save the file:

saveas.jpg (29940 bytes)

For ease in locating the downloaded program file, it is suggested to save the file to your DESKTOP. If the "Save In" box at the top does not say "Desktop", click the arrow at the end of the "Save In" line, then click on "Desktop". Once this is done, click the "Save" button. The program will begin downloading to your Desktop. Once it is finished, you will see the program icon on your desktop:

Double-click on the icon to start the installation of the program.

NOTE for Windows XP users with SP2 installed:

You may be asked to confirm whether or not to RUN this program depending on what settings you have your XP OS configured to:

If you do, click RUN to allow the WinZip installer to install the necessary program files.
