Monogram Placement

machine embroidery monogramMonogramming is perhaps one of the most popular types of embroidery. Deciding exactly where to place the monogram can be challenging. Whether you are adding a traditional monogram or a creative embroidery design, here are some placement guidelines to follow when embroidering these popular items.

Remember that these are only guidelines and can be modified to personal taste.

Linens

Place the monogram on the side without the label and on the end opposite the label. (Measurements are from the bottom of the design.)

Hand Towels: 2” above hem or 1 1/2” above border.

Bath Towels: 4” above hem or 2” above border.

Oversized bath towels: 4” above hem or 3” above border.

Sheets: The bottom of the monogram should be centered about 2” above the wide hem line on the top side of the sheet.

Napkins: On point: The bottom of the monogram should be about 2 from the corner point, or 1” above a decorative border.
Corner, not on point: the edges of the monogram should be about 1” from the two corner edges (bottom right corner of monogram about 1” from the corner point).

Handkerchiefs: On point: the bottom of the monogram should be about 1 1/2” from the corner point
Centered: The bottom center of the monogram should be 1 1/2” from the bottom center of one side of the handkerchief

Garments

Garment placements are general, but may vary slightly due to garment size. When possible, try the item on the wearer to help determine placement.

Shirt cuffs: To place the monogram in the top center of the wrist, start 1” from the center of the cuff toward the buttonhole and 1/4” to 1/2” above cuff edge. The bottom of the letters should fall at the bottom of the cuff.

Ties: Place 1 1/2” to 2” up from the bottom tip or 9” to 11” up from the bottom tip when worn with a vest.

Men's golf shirts or other left chest designs: The center of the design should be placed 7 1/2” to 9” down from the left shoulder seam and 4” to 6” over from the center front.

Women's golf shirts or other left chest designs: The center of the design should be placed 4” to 6” down from the left shoulder seam and 3” to 5” over from the center front.

Sweatshirts or other center front designs: The TOP of the design should be Placed 3” to 3 1/2” down from the bottom of the crew neck edge. Placement will be slightly lower for narrow hemmed necks, and higher for scoop or v-necks.

Jacket front (left chest): Place 3 1/2” to 4” over from the center and 6” to 8” down from the shoulder seam.

Jacket backs:The placement depends on the size of the design and the size of the jacket. A design or lettering can be centered anywhere from 6” to 9” down from the seam on the collar.
