Splendid Holiday Table Runner

Dress up your holiday table with this stunning runner made from Benartex fabrics and the matching machine embroidery design collection "Splendid Holiday".

  • One 19” x 17” piece in a dark green color
  • Two 4” x 15” pieces and two 8 3/4” x 15” pieces in floral print
  • Two 5” x 15” pieces in a dark red color
  • Backing and batting: One 46-1/2” x 15” piece of each

Use the 19” x 17” center front fabric piece in dark green for the following steps:

1. Using wash-away marker, draw a 16” by 14” rectangle approximately centered on the fabric. Locate the center of the rectangle and draw horizontal and vertical placement lines for the center embroidery. Draw 4 more lines parallel to and 3” inside this rectangle. The intersections of these lines will mark the horizontal and vertical placement lines for the four outside designs.

2. The four outer designs are #CC87203. They were enlarged 20% and mirror imaged as follows:
- Upper left design: no change from original
- Upper right design: mirror horizontally
- Lower left design: mirror vertically
- Lower right design: mirror both vertically and horizontally.

3. Using temporary spray adhesive, adhere two layers of OESD Ultra Clean and Tear Stabilizer together. Using the spray again, adhere the stabilizer layers to the wrong side of the fabric at the upper left design location. Hoop all layers as one, using the placement lines drawn in Step 1 as a guide for centering. Embroider the first design, then repeat these steps and embroider the remaining three outer designs, remembering to enlarge and mirror image. Remove stabilizer.

4. Following the above steps for stabilizing and hooping, embroider design #CC87206 (original size and orientation) in the center of the piece. Remove stabilizer. Press well.

1. Redraw the 14” by 16” wide rectangle on the center front fabric piece if necessary. Draw another line 1/2” outside this line. This will be the cutting line. Cut his piece to 15” by 17”.

2. Using all-purpose needle and thread sew the 15” sides of all front pieces together with a 1/2” seam allowance. Assemble these pieces as shown below. This will be the runner top.

3. Using a zipper foot or a specialty cording foot, baste the corded welting or piping to the right side of the runner top with the cord along the 1/2” outside seam allowance. Begin stitching along a straight edge, not at a corner and leave approximately a 2” tail unstitched. Stop stitching 1/2” from the corner and clip welting or piping tape. Incorporate tassels in stitching at corners if desired. Continue stitching and turn the corner. Repeat for all corners. End stitching 2” from the beginning and leave another 2” tail. Turn each tail at a right angle toward the outside, with the cording touching. Stitch over the top of the tails at the 1/2” seam allowance. Trim cording/piping even with edge.

4. Spray the batting with temporary spray adhesive. Adhere the wrong side of the backing to the batting. With outside edges even and right sides of the backing and runner top together, pin the runner top to the backing/batting. Sew the layers together, stitching on top of the basting line made in Step 3. Leave approximately 6” unstitched for turning. Clip corners and grade the seams.

5. Turn right sides out and slip stitch to finish the 6” opening. Secure the layers by stitching in the “ditch” (seam lines). Additional simple quilting may be added if desired. Press lightly.
